Profesora de Yoga muestra con orgullo su menstruación

La menstruación ha sido durante mucho tiempo un tabú del que pocas mujeres se animan a hablar. Hoy por hoy, todavía se mantienen ciertas ideas erróneas sobre su existencia y su propósito. Por ejemplo, el hecho de que necesariamente tiene que doler o que es fea, sucia y asquerosa.

El efecto de este estereotipo es que muchas mujeres se encuentran totalmente desconectadas de sus ciclos naturales. Consideran que la menstruación es una especie de castigo y que tienen que pasar su adolescencia y adultez padeciendo esta carga.

Afortunadamente aparecen cada vez con más frecuencia mujeres como Stephen Gongora que piensan distinto y se animan a mostrarlo en público. Stephen es profesora de yoga y vive en Texas, Estados Unidos. Recientemente subió una foto a su Instagram vistiendo de blanco y realizando poses en las que resultan evidentes las manchas de su período.

En palabras de Stephen:

“Soy mujer y, por lo tanto, sangro. Es doloroso, terrible y hermoso. Sin embargo, no lo sabrás porque lo escondo. Entierro cosas en el fondo de la basura, respiro de manera irregular cuando llegan los calambres mientras aprieto los labios para intentar sonreír".

I am a woman, therefore, I bleed. . It's messy, it's painful, it's terrible, & it's beautiful. . And yet, you wouldn't know. Because I hide it. . I bury things at the bottom of the trash. I breathe, ragged and awkward through the cramps, all the while holding onto this tight lipped, painted on smile. . Tampons? Shhh. We don't say those words out loud. Hide them. In the back pocket of your purse, in the corner of the bathroom drawer, at the very bottom of your shopping cart (please let me get a female cashier). . Events or engagements get missed. I'll tell myself it’s the PMS, sure, but it has more to with the risk of being "caught," at what...I'm not quite sure. . And I’m lucky. . Over 100 million young women around the globe miss school or work for lack of adequate menstrual supplies, & fear of what might happen if the world witnesses A NATURAL BODILY FUNCTION. . WHY? . Because hundreds of years of culture have made us embarrassed to bleed. Have left us feeling dirty and ashamed. . STOP PRETENDING. Stop using silly pet names like Aunt Flo because you're too afraid to say "I'm bleeding" or "vagina." Stop wasting so much effort hiding the very thing that gives this species continuity. . START talking about it. Educate your daughters. Make them understand that it can be both an inconvenience and a gift, but NEVER something to be ashamed about. Educate your sons so they don't recoil from the word tampon. So when a girl bleeds through her khaki shorts in third period (pun intended), they don't perpetuate the cycle of shame and intolerance. . Un mensaje poderoso

El objetivo de Stephen es abrir el debate sobre la menstruación e inspirar mujeres alrededor del mundo a que no sientan vergüenza de menstruar. Para lograr esta toma de conciencia decidió que lo mejor era realizar este video y generar un impacto en la sociedad.

Stephen recibió miles de respuestas de otras mujeres que se sintieron identificadas con el mensaje y quisieron felicitarla. Es que las mujeres hemos vivido cientos de años en una cultura en la que se esconde y rechaza la menstruación. Como sociedad, hacen falta este tipo de acciones para que logremos comprender nuestra femineidad en todos sus aspectos. Ya es hora de que vivamos el hecho de ser mujeres con orgullo y plenitud totales.
